Yakusha Mitate Tokaido Series: Portraits of Kabuki Actors at Post Stations of the Tokaido by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III)
Exhibition Contents
The exhibition will feature what is commonly known as the Yakusha Mitate Tokaido series by Utagawa Kunisada (also known as Toyokuni III). Depicting Kabuki actors in the foreground and scenes of post stations (shukuba) related to the play and characters in the background, this series was very trendy at the time. That popularity led to the series adding more pictures, such as those depicting scenes of various locations between post stations, with the total count exceeding 130 pictures. This exhibition features approximately eighty paintings from the Fujisawa City collection.
