Utagawa Hiroshige painted more than 20 different series of the Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō. In addition to his masterpiece, “The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō (Hōeidō Edition),” other series are filled with creativity and originality to keep giving interest to all viewers. “Kyōkairi Tōkaidō” presented in this exhibition is a series of kyōka, a subgenre of tanka poetry that was popular in the late Edo period, written according to the characteristics of each post station along the Tōkaidō highway.
