FUJISAWA LEGACY ENOSHIMA UKIYO-E
Pilgrimages to Enoshima and the history of Benzaiten worship as appearing in ukiyo-e
Introduction of the Exhibition
Enoshima became widely known largely because of the popularity of pilgrimages to it during the Edo period. At the center of these pilgrimages was the worship of Benzaiten (Sarasvati). This exhibition introduces the history of Benzaiten worship in the Edo period through ukiyo-e of Enoshima and local historical materials.
