The culture of the Tsutaya Toukaidou and oiwake-michi – in pursuit of Hiroshige’s viewpoint

Introduction of the Exhibition

Aside from the famous Hoeido Toukaidou, Utagawa Hiroshige painted more than 20 other series of The Fifty-three Stations of the Toukaidou. Each series has a different design, and the focus in depiction of the stations varies. This exhibition provides an opportunity to see the Toukaidou as viewed through its oiwake-michi (forks), the viewpoint adopted by Hiroshige for Tsutaya Toukaidou.
