The Enshrined Deities of Edo: Benzaiten and Fudo Myo-o
Exhibition Contents
Ukiyo-e featuring Enoshima Benzaiten and Narita-san’s Fudo Myo-o worship will be exhibited to introduce beliefs and daily life during the Edo Period.
In the Edo Period, the rise of gokaicho (opening the curtain) events—where hibutsu (Buddha statues hidden to the public) are exhibited to the public—inspired followers and the general public to make pilgrimages to temples and shrines. The Enoshima and Narita-san pilgrimages of Fujisawa were part of this trend. The two enshrined deities are introduced through comparisons and explanations of their characteristics.
